Creating your own softbox

Ever seen one of those pictures where you thought to yourself; “Wish I had the equipment to take pictures like that”? Well, guess what — you can!!!
We’ve probably all been reading Strobist and/or DIYphotography. Lets go down that road, because trust me; you can DIY!

Yesterday I did my first attempt to create my own softbox and I may say I actually succeeded at making one! The whole process took me 15 to 20 minutes (twas a quicky!).

What you need:

  • Carbon box (preferably larger then 30 cubic cm) (get it for free, we’re on to cheap today!)
  • Aluminium foil (€2,- or less)
  • Sheet of white cloth (Old clothes, T-shirt, your moms/dads/gf/bfs over sized underpants (mind the skid marks!))
  • A strobe (I may certainly hope you have one! I have a Nikon SB-600)

Creating the Urban effect on your pictures

I’m a big fan of dramatic urban-stylish pictures and today I tried out a few new tricks I learned in Photoshop. It’s actually a rather easy process to give your pictures that Urban look.

The first thing you’ll have to do is find a picture you like and open it op in Photoshop (if you’ve taken the picture in RAW you’ll have a benefit, however I won’t be discussing the process of RAW today). I used a picture of Angelina Jolie I found on google.

Once you’ve opened it in Photoshop duplicate the layer (CMD + J on Apple, CTRL + J on Windows). Once you’ve duplicated the layer you’ll have Angelina (or any other image) twice. Next we’re going to desaturate the top layer (CMD + Shift + U) and we’ll have our image in black and white.

Vrouwlijke modellen gezocht

(scuse me for the dutch!)

Ik ben opzoek naar vrouwlijke modellen tussen de 18 en 24 jaar voor een gratis fotoshoot! Je reis/eet kosten worden vergoed en krijgt alle foto’s op DVD!

De foto’s zijn bedoelt voor mijn portfolio dus je bent verzekerd van hogo kwaliteits foto’s. Zelf mag je natuurlijk ook de foto’s gebruiken voor je eigen portfolio, en in overleg, kan je de foto’s ook voor andere (betaalde) doeleinden gebruiken.

Make-up e.d. moet je zelf voor zorgen (Dus neem het mee!) en kleding moet je ook zelf meenemen. Handig is wel als je een aantal setjes mee neemt zodat je van kleding kan wisselen.

Dus heb jij een leuk koppie en zou je graag een gratis fotoshoot willen doen, neem dan even contact met mij op via email of telefoon. Als je mij een mail stuurt, mail ook even een foto van jezelf mee.

Photography

Hey everyone! This is my first attempt at blogging about photography.

Who am I?
I’m an enthusiastic photographer living in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Currently not making a living as a photographer but as a Ruby on Rails developer instead. Currently I’m looking for a new place to live in or around Amsterdam with my girl friend!

My gear
I recently bought a new Nikon D300s and I absolutely love it! With it I also bought a new Nikor 18-200mm ED VR II + a 72mm UV lens. Hopefully I’ll be able to buy my new speedlite this weekend (SB600 with a diffuser), but that will have to wait for now! :)

My goals
I’d absolutely like to get better at photography in general, but my goal is to eventually become a pro-wedding photographer. And soon I’ll have to get my portfolio up and running, already created a new design for it (ah yes I also do a little bit of web design!) and looks pretty stunning.

Anywho, enough for now. Back to work …
